Do Dirty Solar Panels Really Lose Efficiency?

Yes — and the data is clearer than many solar panel owners realise. Studies consistently show that dirty solar panels can lose between 15% and 35% of their energy output depending on the level of soiling. In Purbeck's coastal and wooded environment, panels accumulate dirt, bird droppings, moss, and salt residue faster than in many other parts of the UK.

For a typical 4kW domestic system, that efficiency loss translates directly into higher electricity bills and a longer payback period on your original investment.

What Gets on Solar Panels in Purbeck?

Purbeck's environment creates a specific combination of soiling agents that affect solar panels:

  • Bird droppings — the most damaging contaminant; concentrated in one spot, they create a permanent shadow on cells and can cause localised overheating (hot spotting)
  • Salt residue — coastal properties in Swanage and along the Purbeck coast accumulate salt film that reduces light transmission
  • Organic growth — moss, algae, and lichen establish on panel frames and can spread across glass surfaces in our damp climate
  • Leaf debris and sap — particularly problematic for properties near trees; sap is sticky and attracts further dirt
  • General atmospheric dust and pollution — builds up gradually as a thin film across the entire panel surface

Why Rain Alone Is Not Enough

A common assumption is that rainfall keeps solar panels clean. Rain does wash away loose dust, but it does not:

  • Remove bird droppings (which are alkaline and bond to glass)
  • Clear salt film (which requires purified water to dissolve properly)
  • Remove moss or algae (which grip surfaces and resist water runoff)
  • Clean panel edges and frames where debris accumulates

In fact, rain can make some soiling worse — running dust and debris from the edges of panels into streaks across the glass surface.

The Hot Spotting Risk

Bird droppings deserve special attention. When a dropping covers even a small number of cells on a panel, those cells are shaded while the surrounding cells continue generating electricity. This mismatch causes the shaded cells to act as resistors, absorbing energy rather than generating it.

The result is localised overheating — known as hot spotting — which can permanently damage cells and, in severe cases, crack the glass or damage the panel frame. Regular cleaning eliminates this risk entirely.

How Often Should Solar Panels Be Cleaned in Purbeck?

  • Coastal properties (Swanage, Studland, Worth Matravers): Every 6 months due to salt accumulation
  • Properties with significant bird activity: Every 3–6 months depending on severity
  • Standard inland Purbeck properties: Annually, ideally in spring
  • Properties near trees: After leaf fall in autumn, and again in spring

Our Solar Panel Cleaning Process

At PowerWash Bros we use a specialist purified water soft wash system for all solar panel cleaning. This is critical — tap water contains minerals that leave deposits on glass as it dries, reducing the benefit of cleaning. Our purified water dries completely clear with zero residue.

Our process includes:

  • Panel inspection for damage, hot spotting signs, or loose connections before we begin
  • Gentle soft brush agitation to loosen stubborn deposits without scratching glass
  • Pure water rinse to remove all contaminants cleanly
  • Frame and mounting rail cleaning
  • Post-clean inspection and written report

We never use high-pressure washing on solar panels — the risk of water ingress, damaged seals, and glass cracking makes it entirely inappropriate regardless of how dirty the panels are.

The Return on Investment

For a typical 4kW system generating around 3,400 kWh per year, restoring a 20% efficiency loss through cleaning adds approximately 680 kWh of generation annually. At current electricity rates, this represents a meaningful financial return — often recovering the cost of professional cleaning within a few months of improved generation.

Book Your Solar Panel Clean

We clean solar panels across Swanage, Purbeck, and Dorset for both residential and commercial installations. Get in touch via WhatsApp with details of your system — including approximate panel count and roof access — for a fast, accurate quote.
